EDM – Environmental Development Model
The EDM is a Testing System that emulate/simulate the complete Acoustic Subsystem main functionalities and interfaces. The EDM can incorporate real or simulated equipment.
The EDM is a cost-effective solution for integration and maintenance without the need of using real equipment.
EDM is mainly operated in the LBTS (Land Based Test Site) and RIG (Running in Ground) facility, during the integration phase, in order to verify the complete integration between units and functionality of a whole system.
The EDM is also useful for maintenance tasks and training.
SPAS EDM. Engineering Development Model for Sonobuoy Acoustic Processing System.
Highly recommended is the EDM manufactured by SAES for the Acoustic Subsystem SPAS. The SPAS EDM is an emulator/ simulator/ stimulator of the complete SPAS Acoustic Subsystem, allowing the integration in ground with the Platform Mission System, facilitating the integration phase and consequently diminishing risks. Additionally, the SPAS EDM system is a powerful tool for training acoustic operators.
The SPAS EDM is composed of:
- Acoustic Processor (AP) identical to the onboard unit but based on COTS components.
- Acoustic Signal Generator (ASG), based on COTS components. The ASG simulates the status and control interfaces of the Sonobuoy Receiver, of the Recorder System, and the inputs of the UHF Transceiver. The ASG uses the same physical and protocol interfaces that the onboard units. The ASG also reproduces pre-recorded Acoustics Scenarios.
The integration times have been reduced and program costs and risks have been decreased significantly by using SPAS EDM in different aircrafts modernization programs.
