Multi-influence Signature Measurement, Modelling and Prediction
Vessels sailing through the sea radiate a set of influences (acoustic, magnetic, electric, pressure and seismic) that make up their multi-influence signature, term coined to emphasize that these influences characterize each vessel. Some of these influences (acoustic and magnetic) have been utilized for decades to characterize the vessels in the defense field and to monitor the acoustic pollution in the civilian field. Nowadays it is becoming increasingly clear that use not only on the acoustic radiation but also the overall set of the vessel’s radiations is an advantage, both in the military and the civilian fields.
In the defense field, having multi-influence data from vessels permits us, from the point of view of the protection of the own units, to perform specific tasks and studies to reduce the own signature in order to decrease the probability of being detected and subsequently decreasing the unit vulnerability. On the other hand, from the point of view of threats detection, having multi-influence data permits us to characterize the signature of vessels, increasing the detection capability.
In the civilian field, the interest is centered on the marine environment preservation. In the dual defense-civilian field, protection systems based on multi-influence sensors constitute a highly efficient mean to detect hostile intruders.
The variety of threats in the marine environment may be characterized through a great range of parameters (size, speed, influence signatures, etc.) consequently it is necessary to have modular detection systems to cover the amount of influences, with a high capacity of data transmission to analysis centers.
Likewise, it is essential to have signatures modeling and prediction tools in order to improve ship design or to study the impact caused by the addition or changes in its equipment.
