SPAS – Sonobuoy Processing Acoustic System
SPAS is a family of Sonobuoy Processing Acoustic System (SPAS) developed and manufactured by SAES. One of the main features of the SPAS is its modular and scalable design, permitting to customize the SPAS to the different required configurations by each customer. From 1996, SAES has developed different versions of the SPAS able to process concurrently a different number of sonobuoys, be installed at any ASW platform or vary the weights, dimensions and units in function of the available installation space.
SPAS optimizes the efficiency of the ASW missions by providing signal processing technologies for the detection of the submerged threats. Additionally, SPAS provides automatic detection of the contacts what reduces the operator workload and increases the effectiveness of the ASW mission.
Once the threat has been located, SPAS includes powerful localization tools – including multistatic and energy plots – for tracking the threat. These tools provide information about speed and course of the contact which are critical for executing a proper sonobuoy launching plan.
The success of an ASW mission largely depends of the operative skills of the acoustic operators. SPAS offers the possibility that the operator receives onboard training thanks to the SPAS OBT capability. SPAS OBT capability simulates in real time acoustic scenarios and complex acoustic contacts without the requirement of launching sonobuoys.
The constant development permits the SPAS to be at the forefront of the ASW systems. The last incorporation (DSAP – Digital Sonobuoy Acoustic Processor) allows to process 64 sonobuoys of any type (passive and active in digital and analog implementation).
